Introducing the One Block Wonder Quilt-Along!

Get ready to transform beautiful African print fabric into a quilt filled with movement, color, and unexpected designs in our One Block Wonder Quilt-Along!

Led by our very own Candace Phelps, this quilt-along explores the magic of the One Block Wonder technique—a quilting method that takes a single repeating fabric print and transforms it into an array of striking, kaleidoscope-inspired blocks. By strategically cutting identical sections of fabric and rearranging them, you'll discover entirely new patterns hidden within the original print.

That's part of the fun of a One Block Wonder: you don't know exactly what you'll see until you start creating! Each block develops its own personality, with colors and motifs shifting into stars, pinwheels, geometric shapes, and abstract designs.

For this project, we'll give the traditional One Block Wonder technique a Sew Creative Lounge twist, using bold African print fabrics and coordinating fabrics to create a quilt bursting with color, movement, and visual interest.

• 1½ yards Coordinating Batik Print Fabric

The fabrics have been thoughtfully coordinated to create a finished quilt with beautiful contrast while allowing the One Block Wonder design to take center stage.

What You'll Learn

Throughout the quilt-along, Candace Phelps will guide you step-by-step through the One Block Wonder process, including:

• Understanding how a One Block Wonder quilt is created

• Identifying and working with fabric repeats

• Layering and aligning your African print fabric

• Cutting fabric accurately for repeating blocks

• Creating kaleidoscope-inspired units

• Experimenting with block placement and orientation

• Arranging blocks to create movement and balance

• Incorporating coordinating fabrics, borders, and accents

• Assembling your quilt top

• Finishing your quilt for a polished, professional look

One of the most exciting parts of this technique is playing with your blocks before sewing them together. Rotate a block, move it to another area, or pair it with a different combination and suddenly an entirely new design can emerge. There is no single "right" layout—your creativity becomes an important part of the process.

Finished Project

The finished One Block Wonder Quilt is a vibrant celebration of African textiles, color, and creative possibility. Repeating sections of African print fabric are transformed into intricate geometric motifs, while the coordinating batik, blue-black blender, and bright pink accents frame the design and make the colors pop.
